Bhutan may reconsider its controversial $100 daily tourism fees if the country's tourism industry recovers soon, Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay told CNBC on May 10. Bhutan reopened its borders in September 2022 with an increased "Sustainable Development Fee" of $200 per person per day in place. Indian travelers pay a reduced fee of 1,200 Bhutanese ngultrum ($14.50) per night, and daytrippers from India are exempt from the fee, according to Bhutan's Department of Immigration. The rate often included hotel, transportation and tour guide costs, and the mandatory $65 Sustainable Development Fee. Now, those costs are in addition to the $100 Sustainable Development Fee.

To Danny Yong, the Middle East is still Asia. In particular, multi-strategy hedge funds, the industry subset that large allocators are desperate for thanks to their uncorrelated and consistent returns, are growing in markets like Hong Kong and Singapore. Houston-based Pan Capital is planning to hire macro PMs in Hong Kong this year. These people-heavy firms need plenty of talent to make it all work, and the relatively small size of the Singapore market, coupled with political uncertainty in Hong Kong, puts a strain on the entire system. "Managers follow allocator trends, and the Middle East has been actively allocating while other regions have slowed their deployment.

A trio of lawsuits filed in state court in Las Vegas seek unspecified damages from TikTok, Snapchat and Meta Platforms, the owner of Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, on claims including deceptive trade practices and negligence. The lawsuits were filed just ahead of testimony in Congress on Wednesday by top executives of Meta, TikTok, Snap Inc. and other platforms. John Sadler, a spokesperson for Ford, declined to say whether the Nevada lawsuits were timed to coincide with the congressional hearing. But Sadler acknowledged the decision to file the cases in state court instead of joining other states in federal court follows a path the state took in opioid damages claims. “Social media platforms are a bottomless pit where users can spend an infinite amount of their time,” Nevada said in the Snapchat complaint.

Her “Vivien Leigh: A Biography” (1977) spent 19 weeks on The New York Times’s hardcover best-seller list. Reviewing that book for The Times, Richard R. Glenn Youngkin isn’t on the ballot this year, but his push for a new conservative direction for the Republican Party is. The discipline extended beyond the 10 candidates Youngkin endorsed in competitive primaries, so as to keep distractions at bay. Virginia Democrats, who would normally use such a post to put the entire GOP in an awkward position, did not apparently even notice. Still, there isn’t a lot of evidence that the Virginia Democratic Party sees Youngkin as any sort of liability for the GOP — he isn’t featured negatively in any of their ads, for example. “What we have found out over the last two years is that that vest-wearing, affable, basketball playing dad is really a MAGA Extremist,” said Virginia Democratic Party Chair Susan Swecker.

He neither performed nor choreographed, but he played a major role, often behind the scenes, in fostering American dance. The state became the 22nd to legalize recreational marijuana and follows Missouri and Maryland, which did so earlier this year. Some states are even moving ahead with proposals or ballot measures to legalize weed, putting them within arms' reach of having recreational markets. These are the states that have a chance to legalize adult-use marijuana in the coming years. OhioOhio may vote on whether to legalize recreational marijuana in November. Haren said the proposal also plans to build upon Ohio's medical marijuana program and issue additional adult use licenses to new companies.
Feb 27 (Reuters) - Three banks agreed to pay $1.35 billion to resolve litigation by former Allen Stanford investors who accused them of contributing to the imprisoned financier's massive Ponzi scheme. Canada's Toronto-Dominion Bank <TD.TO> will pay $1.205 billion, HSBC Holdings Plc (HSBA.L) will pay $40 million and Independent Bank Group Inc (IBTX.O) , formerly Bank of Houston, will pay $100 million. They avert a trial that had been scheduled for Monday in Houston federal court, where TD, HSBC and Independent Bank were the last remaining defendants. Two other defendants, France's Societe Generale SA (SOGN.PA) and Mississippi-based Trustmark Corp (TRMK.O), settled for a respective $157 million and $100 million earlier this year. Independent Bank expects to recognize a $100 million first-quarter expense for its settlement, a regulatory filing shows.
New York CNN —TD Bank will pay $1.2 billion to settle a lawsuit alleging its involvement in an infamous $7 billion Ponzi scheme orchestrated by disgraced financier Allen Stanford more than a decade ago. The lawsuit claimed TD Bank collected these deposits in US and Canadian dollar values and continuously ignored red flags about the Antigua-based bank over the years. “TD provided primarily correspondent banking services to Stanford International Bank Limited and maintains that it acted properly at all times,” the bank said. Additionally, HSBC will pay $40 million and Independent Bank, formerly Bank of Houston, will pay $100 million, the receivership’s counsel confirmed. Societe Generale reached a settlement of $157 million and Trustmark agreed to pay $100 million earlier this year.

An Arkansas woman and man have been arrested after authorities discovered the potentially months-old dead body of a 6-year-old boy beneath the floorboards of his home on Friday. Officials believe the boy "died from injuries sustained in the home, possibly three months ago," the statement said, adding that the state medical examiner will determine the cause of death. A representative for the state medical examiner could not immediately be reached. Authorities also found Rolland's 6-year-old daughter in the home with what they believe were burns to her scalp. The girl is receiving treatment for her injuries at a hospital in Memphis and is in stable condition, police said.
An Arkansas motorcyclist was engulfed in a "fireball" and is recuperating in the hospital after a state trooper deployed a Taser and it hit a gallon of gasoline in his backpack, authorities said. Christopher Gaylor, 38, was struck by the Taser after setting Arkansas troopers on a police chase after him in the early hours of Oct. 13 in Little Rock, state police said in a news release. A trooper tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Gaylor “refused to comply” and kept on driving, reaching speeds approaching 100 mph and ignoring traffic stop signs and lights along the way, state police said. Arkansas State PoliceGaylor eventually made his way toward Interstate 30 and jumped from the motorcycle at a residence along Chandler Street in North Little Rock and fled on foot with troopers following behind. One trooper then deployed his Taser to stop Gaylor.
The decline in issuance of data-center debt comes as chief financial officers across industries evaluate their funding options amid the Fed’s rate-hike campaign. Within the data-center sector in particular, that calculus for some companies involves assessing whether the timing is right to tap the securitization market despite the higher costs. What’s more, while the data-center sector is much bigger now than it was during the 2007-09 recession, it hasn’t been tested. The securitization market has historically provided Vantage with more money than it has needed to pay down its loans, Mr. Metwalli said. Digital Realty Trust Inc., a publicly traded company in the sector with an investment-grade rating, has avoided the securitization market.
